Man receives 12 years in menacing case
GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado — An Aspen man who threatened several people at gunpoint last December in Carbondale, and then holed up overnight there in a residence, has been sentenced to 12 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections.
James Patrick Hageland, 43, pleaded guilty in July to a count of first-degree burglary involving a deadly weapon, a class three felony, and two counts of felony menacing.
He was sentenced Sept. 15 at a hearing in Garfield District Court.
The night of Dec. 12, 2010, Hageland reportedly entered a house in the Cleveland Place subdivision carrying a handgun and pointing it at several people who were inside. He eventually allowed everyone but his ex-girlfriend to leave and attempted to hold her hostage. She was able to escape when police arrived, according to reports.
Hageland was eventually taken into custody early the next morning after a several-hour standoff, when police officers were able to talk him into surrendering peacefully.
“It was a just result for a very serious crime,” said Deputy 9th District Attorney Andrea Bryan. The DA's office had requested a 12-year prison sentence, while Hageland's public defender had asked for 10 years.
Hageland had been in the Garfield County Jail on $500,000 bond since shortly after his arrest. The bond amount was increased from $17,500 initially after the main victim testified that Hageland posed a threat to her well-being.
